wake is a dream journal made by Pennoratory LLC. This page explains, plainly, what happens to what you write.

The short version

Your dreams are yours. wake keeps a backup of your journal in your account so it survives a lost phone and follows you to a new one. Nothing you write is sold, shared for advertising, or used to train AI models. There are no ads and no analytics in the app.

Your account

To use wake you sign in with email and password, Sign in with Apple, or Google. We store your email address and a sign-in identifier from Apple or Google so you can get back into your journal. If you use Sign in with Apple's "Hide My Email," we only ever see the relay address.

Your journal

Your entries are stored on your phone and backed up to our database, hosted by Supabase, so you can restore them on another device. The backup includes:

  • what you write (the dream, "before sleep," "feeling upon waking," and "real life context")
  • your mood, the lucid flag, and the color you pick
  • tags, people, places, themes, and emotions.

Only your account can read your rows. Photos you attach stay on your phone and are never uploaded.

What's processed on your phone only

  • People and place tags are picked out on your device by Apple's built-in language tools.
  • App Lock (Face ID, Touch ID, passcode) is handled entirely by iOS. wake never sees your biometric data.
  • Reminder times are stored on your phone and only used to schedule notifications there.

AI features (wake+)

If you're on wake+ or its free month, wake uses Google's Gemini model to find patterns:

  • When you save a dream, its text is sent to generate that entry's themes and emotions.
  • Every so often, your entries' text is sent together to generate your Reflections and To-Do list.
  • Your list of themes and emotions is sent to sort them into groups on the Insight screen.

This goes through a small server we run, so the AI key never ships inside the app. That server doesn't store or log your text: it passes it to Google and returns the result. We use Google's paid API, under which Google does not use your text to train its models. See https://policies.google.com/privacy.

If you're not on wake+, none of your writing is sent to an AI service.

Voice-to-text

The "Speak" button uses Apple's Speech Recognition, which may process audio on Apple's servers under Apple's privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Emails

Sign-up and password-reset emails are sent through Resend, which receives your email address only to deliver them.

Subscriptions

Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. Subscription status is managed through RevenueCat, which receives your account's ID (not your name or email) and your purchase receipts, so we can unlock wake+.

What we never do

  • No ads, no tracking across apps or websites, no data brokers.
  • We don't sell or rent your information.
  • We don't read your journal. The only access is automated: backup, restore, and the AI features above.

Deleting your data

  • Delete a dream: it's removed from your phone right away and marked deleted in your backup, so it never syncs back.
  • Clear all data (Settings): removes every entry from your phone and marks all of them deleted in your backup.
  • Delete account (Settings): permanently deletes your account and every entry in your backup, including ones you deleted earlier. If you signed in with Apple, it also disconnects wake from your Apple ID.
  • Export: you can export a readable copy of your whole journal at any time from Settings.

Children

wake isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and mention it in the app's release notes.
